Career

Serbian anthropologist and director

Born in 1976 in Belgrade, Jelena Jovcic holds a degree in anthropology, she is especially interested in mythological creatures from the Balkans and their influence on the contemporary culture. For her work in anthropology she received the Borivoje Drobnjakovic Award in 2002. She dedicated herself to two loves : film and anthropology. She participated in two Varan workshops in Belgrade in 2004 and 2005. In her first films through self-portrait she spoke about relevant social and political themes. Today she seeks the voices and stories of groups or communities that stayed silent and invisible : film become their voice. Looking for the place of the past in the present is in the essence of all her works. With her films she participated at DokLeipzig, Cinema du Reel, ZagrebDox, and many more where she was awarded. She worked as curator at the museum, as copywriter, as film author and as assemblage and collage artist, but in the essence she is all that time a storyteller in constant search for the good stories and audience. She is one of the founders of the "Atelier Varan Belgrade" and today one of the founders of the "Remorker" were she is working as author, editor and producer. She also enjoys teaching and sharing her knowledge and skills in a field related to film and media.
