The workshop
In 1980, the Ateliers Varan set up a Super-8 workshop in the film school of Mexico, the very first time for a school which trained students in 35 mm feature filmmaking.
The programme
In 1980, a workshop was created at the Mexico Cinema School (Department of Cinema Studies of Mexico’s National Autonomous University). It was the very first time a Super-8 Documentary film course was taking place in the school which traditionally trained students in 35 mm feature filmmaking.
A dozen students enrolled, happy to be perfectly free to film real characters by themselves – firemen, prostitutes, priests… Each film, because of its approach and singular viewpoint, was able to describe a certain reality in Mexican society of the time.
